NEHAWU Limpopo Statement On The Suspension Of A Senior Official At The Department Of Employment Labour

Tuesday January 18, 2022

Moses Maubane - At the Office of the Premier The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in Limpopo welcomes the action taken by the Department of Employment and Labour in the province to suspend its Chief Director Provincial Operations pending a forensic investigation on allegations of irregular expenditure and supply chain management irregularities.

The department has incurred an irregular expenditure of over R3 million which has not been accounted for revolving supply chain management process. We are not surprised, because there were allegations of improper procurement of Personal Protective Equipment [PPEs] and we called for an investigation which fell on a deaf ears.

As NEHAWU, we believe the action taken is a step in the right direction to send a clear message to senior officials in the Department of Employment and Labour in particular, and the Provincial Administration in general, that all shall be held accountable.

Moses Maubane - Jacob AdamsSenior officials repeatedly commit acts of ill-discipline, maladministration, underperform with no punishment, while ordinary and junior workers are disciplined and dismissed daily for frivolous of transgressions and made scapegoats for senior officials.

The suspend official has failed to ensure that our people at Blouberg, Molemole and Mankweng areas are provided with proper and adequate quality services instead the opposite has occurred, resulting to people travelling to Polokwane for services.

Lastly, as NEHAWU, we hope that the suspension of this senior official is not just a public relations stunt, but the investigation process shall be expedited to its logical conclusion.
